Tango

Your Lights Are Out or Burning BadlyDirector: Carlos Saura
Starring: Miguel Angel Sola, Mario Suarez, Cecilia Narova, Laura Fuentes, Mia Maestro, Elena Flores, Juan Carlos Copes and Carlos Nebbia.
Argentina 1998

Directed and written by Carlos Saura, whose award-winning dance films Carmen and Flamenco set represented new standards in cinema, Tango is a stunning work of art, a passionate exploration of a dance form that has achieved near-religious status in Spanish-speaking cultures.

A forty-something director who is suffering from a mid-life crisis, Mario Suarez (Miguel Angel Sola) has been abandoned by his wife Laura. To combat his severe depression, Mario throws himself into making a film about tango. His main investor, Angel Larroca (Luis Galiardo), who is obsessed with a beautiful and gifted dancer Elena (Mia Maestro), convinces Mario to cast her as his lead. Though conscious of the incredible dangers they face, Mario and Elena slowly fall in love as all the creative components of the film begin to mesh harmoniously as he draws on his past experiences to construct the film's narrative. His dangerous passion feeds Tango's progress as it builds toward a climactic final dance scene.

In collaboration with cinematographer Vittorio Storaro, Saura has created an examination of the music and dance of the tango and its role as a reflection of the human condition. The camera skillfully weaves its way through a maze of mirrors, lights, projected images and some of the world's best tango artists, making the audience its willing partner as it sweeps them into the filmmaker’s passionate vision.
In addition to an 1999 Oscar® and Golden Globe® nominations for Best Foreign Language Film, Tango won the Technical Grand Prize from Cannes Film Festival and the Goya Award for Best Sound.
