Thierry DeMey dance film director from Belgium
Presents his films featuring collaborations with choreographers William Forsythe and Anne Teresa DeKeersmaeker

Featuring his newest film, “One Flat Thing, Reproduced”, (2006) director Thierry De Mey will screen and discuss the process of adapting this stage performance for the screen along with showing excerpts from other collaborations with Anne Teresa DeKeersmaeker.

Director Thierry De Mey has turned Forsythe's choreography into an action film, using three cameras in a variety of shots and unorthodox angles. The film is intended as a reinvention of the work and less as an extension of the stage performance. Mr. DeMey follows a formal strategy to capture “the play of triggers, moments of waiting, visual and sonic cues, and to follow the conducting voices of Forsythe’s choreographic melodic montage and contrasting mounting rhythms that penetrates inside the playing space."

One Flat Thing Reproduced

“One Flat Thing” is a dance for 14 dancers and 20 tables by choreographer William Forsythe which premiered in Frankfurt in 2000. Of great theatrical intensity, the work oscillates between disorder and symmetry. It begins with a bang: twenty tables are flung onto the stage, becoming the surface and horizon for all ensuing action. Fourteen electric bodies then traverse the space in alternately restrained and explosive fashion. Amidst this chaos ordered to perfection, the virtuosity of the dancers is rivaled only by the ingeniousness of the choreography.

Hailed as one of the greatest choreographers of contemporary dance, Forsythe has revolutionized conventional ballet, deconstructing the codes and propelling it into the 21st century. For twenty years he was the director of the legendary Ballett Frankfurt, where he produced an impressive body of bold and original works.
