Screendance: A New Visual Language

Opening night screening and party on Friday followed by two different programs on Saturday. In three unique screenings over two days, this collection of 25 innovative dance films from around the world explores the intersection between movement and cinema.

Choreographer: Farley Johansson, Shannon Moreno    Through the common vehicle of an elevator, an executive and a bike courier are temporarily trapped and come undone in a confined space.

 

Risen (Canada, 2008)

By contemplating the questions of perception vs. reality as raised in quantum physics, a young dancer struggles in the rehearsal hall to synchronize his mind, body and soul while looking at the original seed of street and hip-hop culture.

In her quest to transcend heartbreak, Hanson employs technical wizardry to solicit the help and advice of two of her alter egos, Betty and Dr. Faker. Fervent dancing ensues.

The bowling club, La Boule d’Or, in Lausanne, Switzerland help create a ‘dance’ to the passing of time, team spirit, and the peaceful life.  Number 9 is part of the ‘10 Choreographic Interventions in an Urban Landscape.’  DCW has screened earlier Cartographies by Mr. Saire in previous festivals.

A love story in an animated dream sequence.

Captain whimsically explores the nakedness of a triumphant character dropped unarmed, from stage into wilderness- a setting that forces apart her identity in natural light.

The Last Martini (USA, 2008) 6:16

Director/Choreographer: Vickie Mendoza -Inside a corner gin joint, a lovesick hombre remembers heartbreak.  Inspired by the noir films of the 1940’s and 1950’s, The Last Martini plays out the rain soaked reverie of a lonesome man, lost in his last drink. 

 

Tila (Finland, 2007) 4:00

Tila is Finnish for space, place or state, it is also a state of mind; a concept of moving between a distorted dream and an absurd reality.

Aspects of African male identity, physical satire and ironic gestures are depicted through a fusion of video technology and urban dance energy featuring three dancers in collaboration from Madagascar and South Africa.

The spiritual and political body with a strong commitment to the iconography of the Italian school (Duccio, Fra Angelico, Caravaggio, Signorelli).

 

An Issue of Trust (USA, 2007) 12:00

Choreographer: Ashley Browne

This highly stylized film is a loose narrative that explores one aspect of the self-destructive nature that plagues us as sensual beings:  temptation.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Rapture (USA, 2008) 6:30

Director/Choreographer: Noemie Lafrance Set atop the undulating rooftops of the Frank Gehry-designed Fisher Center, Rapture features six dancers retained by ropes,performing on the buildings sloping surfaces.
